Nichol's which stood directly opposite the Towneley Arms had it's hay day in the 1950s. With a juke box in the back room, as this photo suggests it was a very popular 'hang out' for youths not yet old enough to get into the local pubs and clubs.

GUAZZELLI'S
Prior to Mr. Nichol taking over the premises, as of the twenties the shop had belonged to the local confectioner Guazzelli who, along with Figliolini and Rossi was one of three prominent names in the ice-cream/confectionary trade in the area for many years. Livio (Leo) Guazzelli had first established his business in Chopwell before moving to Rowlands Gill where he ran a “confectioners and refreshment rooms” opposite the Towneley Arms...": (Source: Brian Pears)
Nora Henderson recalls Mr. Guazzelli's niece, Mary, working there when she would call in on an odd occassion to treat herself to an ice-cream cornet, but "you could also sit in and have a soft drink".

In earlier times, a man from the Public Assistance came weekly and paid out money from a room in the shop.
