If, however, William did drink, although the Vale of Derwent Social club was literally on his doorstep, and the Towneley Arms just over the road, it would indeed have been frowned upon for William to be seen drinking in the village. That said, the cost of taking the train to Scotswood for a pint would have taken a considerable chunk out of his wages; all the more so since William worked as a stone man - not the most well-paid of jobs at the pit. |
